Daniel & David Garcia, otherwise known as Kane & Abel, conjure up images of urban decay and "gangsta" lifestyle on RISE TO POWER. The album opens with an ass-covering "parental advisory" disclaimer, after which the duo commences to wax lyrical about the "illegal business" that controls America, busting heads, survival of the fittest, and street crime over the angular pizzicato string samples and sub-woofer bass synth that are de rigeur in late-'90s hip-hop recordings. Spanish-language spoken interludes laced with gunshots provide a hint as to the demographic RISE TO POWER is aimed at, but you don't have to speak Spanish to understand the message of turmoil and emotional torment at the heart of Kane & Abel's work. There's no pop crossover going on here, no catchy choruses or samples of '70s AM hits, just hardcore gangsta rap, delivered in an appropriately uncompromising manner.

...The lyrics on RISE...may be a little thuggish...but the beats are incredible, comprised of thick chunks of intergalactic Moog funk that fuse live instruments with sampled hooks...
